Positive: We enjoyed certain aspects of our stay at Aethos Ericeira, particularly the location and the beautiful views. The lobby and reception area are very nicely designed and create a strong first impression. That said, we felt there were several areas where the experience did not quite match the positioning and price point of the hotel. The design is nice and visually appealing, although we did not find it particularly unique or distinctive. At times, it felt as though the hotel is designed more with social media and creating a “hype” around the property in mind than with creating a consistently comfortable and refined guest experience. The interior design of the lobby and reception is particularly well done, but unfortunately this quality and attention to detail does not seem to have been carried through to the rooms, which felt less special in comparison. Staff & service Our experience with the staff was mixed. Some team members were genuinely lovely, warm and helpful, and really contributed positively to our stay. Others were less welcoming or attentive, which created some inconsistency in the overall service experience. We appreciate that maintaining a consistently high level of service in hospitality is challenging, but consistency is particularly important in a hotel at this level. A stronger focus on service standards and guest experience across the whole team could make a significant difference.
Negative: The food options felt quite limited, particularly given the size and positioning of the hotel. One of the main frustrations was that both the restaurant and breakfast buffet were open to the public. As hotel guests, we would expect to have some priority when it comes to booking a table at the hotel restaurant, especially when we are staying on the property. Having to plan around whatever availability is left makes it feel as though hotel guests are not being prioritised. The same issue was noticeable at breakfast. On Sunday in particular, the breakfast area was extremely busy and felt overcrowded, which took away from what should have been a relaxed start to the day. We assumed this may have been partly due to walk-in guests. It would be worth considering whether hotel guests could have some form of priority or whether capacity could be managed differently during peak periods. Departure facilities One small but important detail that we found disappointing was the lack of a dedicated room or changing facility for guests who have a late flight after check-out. Our flight was at 21:30, and we were told that we could use the showers next to the gym and pool. While we appreciated that an option was offered, this is not quite the experience we would expect from a hotel at this price point. Having a dedicated guest changing room with a proper shower would make a significant difference, particularly for guests with evening flights. Overall value Ultimately, while we appreciated the location, views and some of the design elements, we did not feel that the overall experience matched the amount we spent. At this price point, we expected a more seamless, consistent and guest-focused experience. The property has a lot of potential, but for us there was a noticeable gap between the image and positioning of the hotel and the actual experience. For that reason, although we enjoyed certain aspects of our stay, we would probably not return.
